We are very passionate about our industry and are always striving to better ourselves in our profession.
Hawke’s Bay Mobile Shearing (HBMS) is the only mobile shearing company in the Hawke’s Bay area.
Our fleet is completely self-contained, meaning we cover all shearing and sheep care requirements in one sweeping visit.
Hawke’s Bay Mobile Shearing was founded by Bruce and Ngaia Richardson in 2001, bought by Lachie Baynes in 2018 and is now owned by Douglas Smith and his family since August 2026.
Doug is proud to take over this well-established business after shearing full time for the past 28 years, and brings a wealth of knowledge from the industry he is so passionate about.

Growing up in the small town of Ruawai, Doug took up full time shearing at the age of 20 years where he enjoyed his travels working in America, England and Ireland.
He finally settled in Hawke’s Bay in 2010 while breaking a two-stand ewe shearing world record with his brother.
Doug is excited to now own HBMS and ‘retire’ from full time shearing - but still be working in the industry that he is very passionate about, and to carry on doing what he is good at - Shearing!
Known as a quiet gentle giant, Doug loves clay bird shooting, hunting deer, tramping and camping with his partner Renee and their son.
