Hawke’s Bay Mobile Shearing (HBMS) is the only mobile shearing company in the Hawke’s Bay area. In fact, it’s the only company in New Zealand with fully-equipped mobile shearing trucks. Our fleet is completely self-contained, meaning we cover all shearing and sheep care requirements in one sweeping visit.
Founded by Bruce and Ngaia Richardson in 2001, and handed over to Lachie in 2018, HBMS is a rare gem; we have the benefits of a well-established business, but also a fresh, enthusiastic owner in the drivers’ seat.

After living the dream – shearing and traveling the world on the back of a handpiece – for the past decade, Lachie has returned to the Hawke’s Bay to ‘settle down’ and get stuck into his new venture. During his travels, Lachie experienced everything from shearing in the middle of a field during a British blizzard and getting stuck in the Gumbo Hills of Montana, USA, to driving hundreds of miles to shear 10 sheep on a fur farm in Finland.
Throughout his travels, Lachie made friends with locals and learnt various traditional styles of farming along the way. This open-minded attitude and constant desire to learn are a big part of what HBMS is about. Lachie loves his job and loves interacting with new people every day, and it’s apparent in the quality of Hawke’s Bay Mobile Shearing’s work.
